On His Own Trip

Gurez Valley

8 Days

Overview

In Captain Nero’s words

“Gurez doesn’t really know whether it wants to be a Ladakh or a Kashmir. It doesn’t really know if it wants to be barren and bare, or lush and green. It is confused if it wants to be a rugged alpha male or a pretty girl. So it decided ‘why choose, when I can be both Ladakh and Kashmir.”

Gurez is, to put it simply, surreal. Cast your eye in one direction and you see tall brown mountains. Look over to the other side and you see green meadows, a river snaking through and houses dotted red and brown on the landscape. You will see snow capped peaks in the distance, a river that mysteriously changes colour from blue to grey, sunsets that render the sky gold and pink, flowers that spring wildly orange, white and yellow. Gurez is like a painting, and its fitting that its one of the remotest parts of the country – for one should really have to go some distance to see something beautiful”

Since we at On His Own Trip have been to Kashmir so many times, and explored large parts of it, we have curated this trip with a lot of thought and love and bring to you a very unique Kashmir in this trip. On this trip from June 7-14, we have the beautiful Gurez Valley with its Ladakh-like mountains, a peak named after a famous poetess, springs and rivers, shooting stars and quaint villages, and people who are super simple, happy and very friendly. In summer, Kashmir is blooming with flowers, its meadows are teeming with life, and the rivers are surging  and you can’t help but gush at how green, how wild, and how lovely it is.

Itinerary

Arrive at Srinagar airport before 12 noon. Sharp at 12, a private tempo traveler shall be taking us to Pahalgam.
Enroute we shall stop at the Bats village of Pampore, and visit a bat factory.

Around 9 am we shall be transferred to the base village of Aru from where our trek begins. The trek from Aru to Lidderwat will take 4-5 hours depending on your fitness.
We shall be leaving our main bags at the Pahalgam hotel and only carrying a day pack. The plan is to camp overnight at Lidderwat.

After breakfast, pack your tent, and hand it over to the local guides. We shall trek back to Aru today. Once we reach, our cabs will take us to Pahalgam, after taking our bags from the hotel, we will head back to our Srinagar hotel.

Today, we are headed to one of the most remote corners of Kashmir – Gurez Valley!
The route is picturesque. First we shall cross Wular Lake – one of the largest freshwater lakes in Asia.

After breakfast, we shall set off for the day’s itinerary, starting with the beautiful Habba Khatoon peak. In some ways, the Habba Khatoon peak is the soul or symbol of Gurez.

Today, we are headed to the beautiful Tulail Valley. One side is absolutely bare, barren and brown. The other side of the highway is green, a river flows merrily, and you can see wooden houses with sloping roofs dotting the landscape.

It’s time to leave the charming Gurez Valley today.
After a super lazy breakfast, we head back to Srinagar, and it will take us five hours for the journey. Enroute click pics at Kishanganga river.

After breakfast, we head for Srinagar airport.
