Stunning islands and flora & fauna, topped with delicious chocolate, bananas and coffee, all make Ecuador quite an attractive destination. It certainly makes it worth knowing more too, so, let’s dive right into it!

Interesting Facts:

1. It is the only country in the world to be named after a geographical feature, i.e., the equator.

2. Hello, my body builders, your favourite fruit bananas are found in abundance here, after all Ecuador is the world’s largest exporter of bananas.

3. My absolute favourite thing about Ecuador is that it became the first country to validate rights of nature in 2008! Nature has the “right to exist, persist, maintain and regenerate its vital cycles”; granted to it as a constitutional right.

4. This may have in some way aided the fact that 10% of the world’s plant species are grown here!

5. It was also the first country to abolish the death penalty in 1906.

6. Which place on Earth is closest to the Sun? Mount Chimborazo in Ecuador! It is the farthest point from Earth’s Core.

7. While today UNESCO World Heritage Sites are found globally, Ecuador is home to the places that were first and second to be conferred with this status, Galapagos Islands and Quito! In fact, Charles Darwin largely based his theory of evolution on discoveries made during his time in Galapagos.

8. 15% of bird species also come from Ecuador, i.e., 1,638 species of birds.

9. Ecuador really is home to many wonders. The world’s first ever shape shifting vertebrate also hails from this country. Meet the “Punk Rocker”, i.e., mutable frog! Spoiler alert, he is NOT an X-men ?

1. Of course, it won’t be a shocker that the very first recommendation is Galapagos Islands. It is the chance to witness wildlife like never before. Snorkel, surfboard or dive with sea-lion pups, penguins, blue footed boobies, marine iguanas, etc. as your companions!

2. For a change in landscape, head to the glacier capped Andes for a dreamy mountain getaway. You can even take a scenic rail journey here!

3. And when in the Andes, if you have an adventurous soul which you feel would be satiated with a hike during your holiday, head to hike up Cotopaxi which offers stunning views and incredible wildlife experiences as well.

4. And if a little more adventure is what you desire then head to the country’s adventure capital, Banos to see the view of a volcano, dramatic waterfalls and to take nature hikes. Not to forget the chance to do bungee-jumping, rafting and cycling around.

5. Yasuni National Park – a chance to explore the Amazon jungle!
