Home > Humans of OHOT – Abhay Tyagi

There are boys I love, boys who are my bhais and there’s Abhay. Tyagi has done trips with me to Meghalaya, Bhutan, Kashmir, Ratnagiri, and in these 2 years, my warmth for him has constantly increased.
:
Last month, when we were falling short of a trip leader to lead a trip, I asked him and he agreed, a tad nervously. That he was super responsible, dedicated, sincere, and knew how we lead trips, was a given, but would he be able to engage the group, was the question. But when the trip ended and testimonials about him came in from many trippers, I was very glad.
:
Four days later, he joined me as a tripper for my Sikkim trip. People who know me well, know that if an old tripper is close to me, they are given tasks on trips as if they were part of the brand. Moreover, I wanted to see how he handled groups. Even by the high standards we set, he surpassed them. His selflessness, him sacrificing his one week of pure holidaying and being part of a process that wakes up people early in the morning, sitting in different cars at various times to engage as many people as possible;helping people on hikes, over rocks and streams;made me nod my head in admiration. The two of us slept for less than 3 hours on any given day on the trip.
:
Our best moment – we were walking on our mountain in Lachen, with some of the trippers, when I asked him if he could run down a cliffside slope. Without thinking fr a second,he went down. The soil was loose, and he slipped and to break his fall, clutched at a thorny plant. As I went to help him, a few stones slipped under my feet and struck him. When we came up, everyone was concerned. But he made no fuss, washed his hands, and resumed the walk. Not one word. Trippers say, its his love for me that he didnt think a second before doing what I asked. Over the course of the trip, a few incidents made me realise how protective I am of him.
:
Abhay, you are years younger than me. But my respect for you is deep. My love even more so. To many more trips together, to going down more cliff sides, to more cups of honey lemon tea and a life time of brotherhood, here’s a silent nod to you.
