The Shillong Airport is located in Umroi, around 40 km from the city and is also known as Barapani Air Force Base or Umroi Airport, is the nearest aiport. Since there are not many flights operating in this airport as they get cancelled at the last minute due to adverse weather conditions, the best option would be to fly to Guwahati.
The Guwahati airport is called Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport located 104 km from Shillong and is well connected to other cities in India. One can take the shared cabs, always available outside the Guwahati airport and reach Shillong in 3 hours.
You can take a bus from Guwahati to Shillong. There are several private as well as government operated buses going at regular intervals. But it’s a better idea to hire a taxi for a convenient and comfortable journey. You can even take a shared taxi to be more economical. The journey usually takes 3-4 hours.
There is no railway connectivity in Meghalaya. However, the nearest railway station is Guwahati, which is located 105 km from Shillong. From there, you can take a taxi and drive down to Shillong by road.
