Lachung means the ‘Small Pass’. From Chunthang a road bifurcates and leads towards Lachung.

Located in North Sikkim, Lachung is one of the most picturesque town offering views of the snow-capped mountains. Situated in the mighty Himalayan ranges, this hill-station is at 9,600 feet above the sea level.

You can take a flight to Bagdogra Airport from any of India’s major cities and then travel by car or bus the rest of the way up to Lachung. It takes almost 7 hours to cover the distance of 197 km from Bagdogra to Lachung. But, we recommend you to stay overnight in Gangtok before going to Lachung, as you need a permit for North Sikkim.

People mostly prefer to travel to Lachung by road as it is a hill station and has good roads and great connectivity with nearby towns. A number of buses, taxis and jeeps are available. Mostly SUVs and jeeps are used here to navigate rugged mountainous terrains.

But, you have to make a stop at Gangtok for a night, as you need a permit for North Sikkim. Being a protected area, you need to get Protected Area Permit issued by Tourism and Civil Aviation Department of Sikkim. You should contact a registered tour operator in Gangtok to get this done minimum one day before you start for Lachen.

NOTE: Only vehicles from tour operators who are registered with North Sikkim Tourism are allowed, as no cars from Gangtok or other states are allowed to go there.

Lachung does not have its own railway station, but the nearest station is New Jalpaiguri Railway Station in Siliguri which is 190 Km away. Private cabs as well as public buses ply from here to Gangtok.
