Lachen is a small village located in the north Sikkim at an altitude of 9,000 ft. From snow-capped mountains to lush green forests, winding roads to beautiful streams, the surroundings of Lachen are blessed with numerous wonders.

If you are looking forward to travelling by air, then the best way to reach Lachen is by taking a direct flight to Bagdogra airport and then from there, a private vehicle, shared taxis or a bus to Gangtok. The distance between Gangtok and the airport is 124 km and will take you around 4 – 5 hours to reach. This airport is well connected to the major cities of India.


Travelling all the way from Bagdogra to North Sikkim might be a strenuous task for a single day, so, it is advised to take a break at Gangtok. Being a protected area, you need to get Protected Area Permit issued by Tourism and Civil Aviation Department of Sikkim. You should contact a registered tour operator in Gangtok to get this done minimum one day before you start for Lachen.

Once you arrive in Siliguri, you can either hire a taxi from the station or the airport to reach Gangtok which will take you around 3 – 4 hours. From Gangtok, numerous taxis and buses to Lachen are available and takes about 5 hours to reach.

NOTE: Only vehicles from tour operators who are registered with North Sikkim Tourism are allowed, as no cars from Gangtok or other states are allowed to go there.


One can travel to the regions in Sikkin from the New Jalpaiguri Railway Station in Siliguri. This railway station is the closest to Lachen and is very well connected to Kolkata, Delhi, Guwahati and other major cities of India. It is around 190 km from Gangtok, and one can easily get taxis and buses from here to the main parts in Sikkim.
