How To Reach Kaza

Kaza is located high up in the mountains of the Lahaul and Spiti valley in the north Indian state of Himachal Pradesh. It is the largest township and commercial center of Sipti Valley. Being centrally located, it is a good base to explore the rest of Spiti.

Depending on your convenience, you can travel here at any time of the year either by your own vehicle or public transport.

It is a 115 km journey from Manali which takes 6 hours. Another option is to take bus from Shimla via Kinnaur to Kaza. The route from Shimla to Kaza remains open from May to October and is about 412 km long and will take you nearly two days to reach.

One is via Manali: Manali – Rohtand Pass – Gramphu – Chattru – Kunzum Pass – Kaza (Spiti Valley)

The other one via Shimla – Kinnaur Valley as Shimla – Kinnaur – Nako – Sumdo (Spiti Valley) – Tabo – Kaza.

After personal vehicle, HRTC maintains a daily and regular bus service to Kaza. There is a Bus from Shimla that leaves for Kaza at 6:30 PM. This Bus is a direct Bus and arrives at Kaza sometime in the evening at around 5 PM. Also, there are two daily buses from Manali to Kaza by HRTC. One leaves at 5 AM and another at 5.30 AM. This bus reaches Kaza around 4 PM the same day.

Kaza does not have its own airport yet. So, will either have to catch a flight to Chandigarh, Shimla or Bhuntar.

Chandigarh is the biggest airport of all and once you get there, you can either catch a bus for Manali or Shimla as I explained above. Or you can book a private taxi for the tour.

The second choice would be the Jubbarhatti airport, which is about 23 kilometers from Shimla and is also referred to as Shimla airport. There are regular flights available for Jubbarhatti to Chandigarh and Delhi but finding one from some other city may be tough.

The third choice would be the Bhuntar Airport, which is about 50 kilometers from Manali. Once you land here, you can board a taxi from the airport to your hotel in Manali.

Since the flights are way more expensive for Jubbarhatti and Bhuntar Airport, it is advisable to catch a flight to Chandigarh and then start your journey from there.

Much like the flight, your options of travelling to Kaza by train is also limited. You will either have to catch a train to Chandigarh (517.7 km), Shimla (450 km) or Jogindernagar (364.1 km). Best of these three would be to reach Chandigarh by Train and then travel from there to Kaza by either a Bus or Taxi.
