Nestled in the East Khasi Hills, 54 km from the state capital Shillong, Cherrapunjee is our favorite travel destination.
The scenery – hills crested with pines and firs, deep valleys with gurgling streams below, a gentle sun shining upon you, bright but not sunny, and crisp, cool air. That’s how Cherrapunjee syas hello to you!
Cherrapunjee is 54 km south of Meghalaya’s capital Shillong. You can get there from Shillong in three ways, depending on your budget.

You have to first drive down to Shillong and then hire a car from there. Alternatively, you can share space in one of the taxis that ply regulary from Shillong and Sohra. Theere are several Sumo stands in Shillong and the ride will cost you around INR 70 per person. It takes 1.5 – 2 hours to get from Shillong to Cherrapunjee.
Cherrapunjee does not have a functioning airport. Umroi Airport in Shillong is the closes airport to Cherrapunjee. However, there are not many flights operating in the airport. So, another option to reach is to take a flight to Guwahati Airport.
Most people have travelled from Guwahati to Shillong to visit Cherrapunjee. So, you go to Shillong by road first and then start your journey there.
Guwahati Railway Station, which is well connected to the rest of the country is the closest railway station to Cherrapunji. You can easily hire a taxi or board a bus from the station to reach Cherrapunjee.
