We play a lot of games on the trips!
One of these times in Meghalaya, we were sitting in a room, at around 1 am, wondering what to play next.
A voice quipped, “let’s play Dark Room“. We looked around us. Three beds, a couple of wooden cupboards, and a bathroom. It didn’t look at all like a place that could hide 10-12 people.
“Let’s do this”
According to the rules of Dark Room, the “denner” steps out of the room and everyone else hides. The lights are switched off, and the room has to be pitch dark. When the denner comes in, he not only has to find people, but also correctly identify them, in the dark. The hiding people can exchange accessories, clothes, spectacles, cover themselves with blankets, dive under beds, hug each other and sit so close that not even air can pass between them, basically do anything to confuse the guy trying to identify them. If the Den gets 3 people correctly, the first person caught is the new Den. If he identifies two wrongly, before getting 3 correct, he has to go out and give Den again.
I have realized that it’s a game which is easier for girls, than for boys 😉 When we play, girls giving Den go all out while touching all the people hiding – touching beards, stomachs, legs and err lets stop here. Whereas the boys when they give den, lose all their swagger, walk into the room quietly, will touch girls very gingerly, mostly touching only their hair or arms and trying to figure out in their heads who that girl could be.
It’s a hilarious game nevertheless with people hooting from their hiding spots, making ridiculous sounds, covering themselves with cushions, mattresses, blankets, pullovers, hiding on top of mantelpieces, clinging onto ceilings etc. If the Den pulls at your blanket, you can do all you can to still hold the blanket over you!
We played for over two hours and were in hysterics most of the time.
Attached here are a few pictures I clicked while the Denner had stepped out of the room, and the lights were still on while the people were desperately finding places to hide.
