Kaziranga National Park, situated in Assam is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the most sought after wildlife holiday destinations in India. The National Park’s 430 sq km area is covered with elephant – grass meadows and dense forests. Located in the edge of the Eastern Himalayan biodiversity hotspots, Kaziranga is home to more than 2200 of the magnificent Indian one-horned rhinoceros.
To reach Kaziranga via Guwahati, there are two ways.
- VIA ROAD
Kaziranga is well connected to Guwahati via road. You can hire a taxi from Guwahati to Kaziranga. It is a long 193 kms journey which might take you 4-5 hours, but it absolutely pays off, as you get to see different terrains, plantations and swamp deer occasionally crossing roads.
- VIA FLIGHT
You can take a flight from the Guwahati Airport to Rowriah airport, situated in Jorhat which is the closest airport to Kaziranga. It is a short flight of 50 mins, which will save you 5 hours of traveling via road. OHOT organises Kaziranga – Meghalaya tour packages.

To promote wildlife tourism in Assam, Kaziranga Park authorities organize safari tours in an around the national park. There are two kinds of safaris available.
- JEEP SAFARI
The Jeep Safari is most preferred by the tourists for its favourable timings, and the safari is guarded. For around 2 hours, the jeep takes you in and around the national park, where you can witness various fauna in their natural habitat, the alluvial savanna woodlands, the tropical deciduous forests, and if you’re lucky enough, you might spot a tiger sneaking from the bushes or crossing your path. The experience is worth savouring and once in a lifetime.
Morning Jeep Safari : 8AM to 10 AM
Afternoon Jeep Safari: 2PM to 4PM
- ELEPHANT SAFARI

If you want to experience an elephant back ride, this early morning ride is for you. The 1 hour long safari takes you through the national park. In the morning, you can witness a plethora of tropical birds which fly down in the season.
The best time to visit Kaziranga is from November to April, as the park remains closed during May to October because of the heavy rains. Chances of spotting rhinos are more in the winters.
