Bagini Glacier: A trek through the Nanda Devi National Park

Proudly seated at an altitude of 14,816 feet in the Garhwal Himalayas, Bagini Glacier is a gorgeous Himalayan glacier located near Joshimath. It starts near the base of Trishul and Changabang peaks and flows northwards from here. This adrenaline pumping trek gives you an opportunity to walk along the icy river and explore the naturally diverse Nanda Devi National Park. You walk through the lush green meadows blooming with wildflowers, crystal clear streams, rocky paths, dwindling hamlets and frosting mountain tops. It also gives you the opportunity to feast your eyes on the mighty Dunagiri, Changa Banga and Kalanka peaks too.

Day 1: Haridwar to Joshimath

Altitude: 1030 ft to 6,150 ft

Distance: 250 km

Time Taken:  8-9 hours

On the first day of your trek, you’ll be driving from Haridwar to Joshimath. The entire journey takes you through the mountain side, with the River Ganges flowing below you. You also get to witness the confluence of rivers Alaknanda and Bhagirathi to form river Ganges. An early morning start will get you there during the day time. And, will take minimum 8 hours 40 minutes, depending on traffic.

Day 2: Joshimath to Jumma and trek to Ruing Village

An easy drive towards Jumma, takes 1-hour from Joshimath. The trail starts from the Jumma village, through the blessings of peaceful aura, cross the bridge of Dhauliganga and descent to Ruing village. The road to Ruing is mildly steep through the forest. It’s about 3 kms from Jumma to Ruing and won’t take more than 2-3 hours. At around 2800m above sea level, Ruing is a beautiful village, located on gentle slopes and amidst lush coniferous forests of firs, deodars and spruces. There might be restrictions on camping in the village area. So, you’ll have to trek further for 2-3 km and camp on a picturesque meadow.

Day 3: Ruing village to Dronagiri village

Day three’s trek will lead you into the forest through a path of inclines and descents with little streams that you will need to cross. Besides that, the trail also offers the breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks while you pass through the dense forest along with the Bagini river on your left side. A cemented road takes you to the village and offers great views of some High Himalayan peaks such as Ghori Parvat, Hathi Parvat and other snow clad mountains. The blooming flowers and greenery all around in summers will leave you speechless. Pitch your tents in the outskirts of the village and go for a hike to Bhumial God Temple closeby.

Day 4: Dronagiri village to Bagini Base camp

As you start hiking upwards, the stunning Rishi Peak starts peeking from the horizon. After a 30 min walk you’ll come across a concrete bridge over the Bagini Nala. The area here is completely devoid of the vegetation and is mostly rocks and boulders. To catch your breath, stop by the streams and spend some time there. From here a gentle trek of roughly 3 hours will bring you to the first in the series of three Bagini Glacier base camps. Few stunning peaks that can be observed from this place are Satminal, Hardeul and Rishi pahar. Pitch your camps there and retire for the night.

Day 5: Bagini Base camp to Bagini Glacier and back to Bagini Base camp

Altitude: 14,500 ft to 14,816 ft

Distance: 10 km

Begin your trek early to catch the sunrise from Changabang base camp, which is around 3-4 kms from Bagini Advanced Base Camp. Final destination of the Bagini Glacier Trek offers you a spectacular view of the surrounded peaks and, also experience the adventurous trail that you don’t want to forget. From the advanced base camp, the trail to Changbang base camp is an ascending one with many moraines and offers stunning views of Hathi(6507m), Ghori, Satminal(6911m), Dunagiri east(7066m),Garur peak, Trishuli(7057m), Hardeul(7323m), Rishi(6099m), Kalanka(6931m), and Changabang(7174m). Spot many crevasses on the Bagini Glacier. Steps back to Base camp on the same route. And then, overnight stay in the same camp.

Day 6: Bagini Base camp to Ruing village

Altitude: 14,500 ft to 9,186 ft

Distance:  18 km

Time Taken: 5-6 hours

Post breakfast retrace your steps by passing through Dronagiri village and reach Ruing. Setup your camps and retire for the night.

Day 7: Ruing village to Joshimath

Altitude: 9,186 ft to 6,150 ft

Distance:  3 km trek (44 km drive)

Time Taken: 3-4 hours

Begin your final section of your on-foot excursion to reach Jumma. From here you will be driven to Joshimath. It’s time to relax and recover from the trek.

Day 8: Bagini Glacier Trek –  Joshimath to Haridwar

Distance: 250 km

Time Taken: 8-9 hours

After having breakfast, a long journey through the beautiful villages takes you to Haridwar.
